Splat!

Splat!

I looked up shocked! We all burst into peals of laughter as Sarah said: "Well, that was an answer from the Lord."

Gluten Free.

Ever heard of those words?

Gluten is found in wheat. Now some people can tolerate it but more and more people are beginning to realize that they are not able to tolerate it. We think that Jason is one such person.

He has been sick for months now and ,after getting some council from people who have had some of the same problems, we decided to cut wheat out of our diets and see the difference that it makes.

We are on day two and so far I have eaten two eggs (and less then a handful of chocolate chips you did not just read that).

Yesterday was day one and we did pretty good. It was also the first time that we were really tested!

My sister-in-law invited us and a few other families with young children over for dinner. We were supposed to grill out but it was rainy so we ate inside. Jason and I (I am doing this with him) did pretty well overall. Instead of hamburger buns we had spelt bread (which is a more ancient grain and many people with wheat intolerance can eat it), forsook the chips, pink stuff and macaroni salad.

Then came time for desert.

Ice cream sandwiches, loads of cool whip, chocolate sauce and butterfingers. Can anyone say: temptation?

So I was outside with all the mom's helping the little ones get their desert and then they started handing our desert out.

I caught Jason's eye and asked him if he thought it was ok if I had some. He indicated he did not care (which I knew he wouldn't I was just trying to not feel so guilty about devouring eating this amazing looking concoction) and so I took my serving and happily envisioned myself eating that first amazing, definitely not gluten free/healthy bite.

Guilt consumed me.

Ok, that may be a little bit dramatic but I really did feel bad! I mean, here is my sweet husband doing so well and I can't even NOT have desert to help show him some support.

What is a girl to do?

Ask the other Mama's what they think of course!

"So what if your husband is going gluten free? Should you support him in all things or just eat this desert anyway?"

They smiled and said: "Eat the desert."

I smiled thinking of the smooth medley of flavors I was about to consume when all the sudden without warning: SPLAT!

My bowl slipped (not even sure how that happened) and that beautiful ice cream stuff smashed all over the patio.

Now really-would it have been that bad if I had had that teensy weensy little piece of cake? No!

But, I am glad I didn't!

See the Lord has called me to be my husband's help meet. I believe that means even in the little things in life.

My husband has to give up wheat, which is really hard for him, so what can I as his wife do? Support him in it!

I am thankful that I did not eat that desert because I could go to my husband and say: "I didn't have any either."

Not only did it make him feel better but it also showed him that I love him and am willing to support him and help him even in the things that are not as fun!

So folks, we got through the first day of no wheat! On to the next...well, who knows? I am excited to see how this is going to change our lives! I will definitely keep you updated!

Have you ever had to go gluten free? Have any suggestions? I would love to hear them!

  2. I went gluten free last year (and was able to become pregnant & carry our daughter to term as a result, what a nice reward!!) - it was hard at first, but became MUCH easier once I worked out some 'treats' and cakes that were gluten free. Then I felt much less deprived! After the initial adjustment it became second nature quite quickly, maybe about 4-6 weeks.

(however going completely dairy free as well was a different matter altogether - much harder & no chocolate! This one isn't forever though, as it's our daughter who is intolerant to cow's milk protein that's transmitted through my milk)

It's commendable that you're doing this for your husband. Good job!

  3. Oh Katy, what a great story! I've not ever been anything-free... (I probably should fast sugar and/or processed foods though... but that's another story!) but I know if can be tricky - working with kids who have all sorts of allergies and intolerances has taught me that! Hope it keeps going (fairly!) smoothly for you both and isn't always quite so... messy! :D

  4. I think it's great you're doing something like this with your husband! But on the other hand, I do have issues with the "gluten-free" hype.

Of course you must eat gluten-free if you have those health issues. But for healthy people, gluten is in no way bad or negative. It's good for you, if you can digest it properly! I believe God made our foods to be good for most and I think avoiding it for the sake of "dieting" or "eating healthier" is a myth and has been proven to be one scientifically. Don't eat junk food, gluten foods are just as healthy as gluten free if they're all unprocessed.
I also read that gluten free diet people have special needs concerning nutrients because of the lack of certain grains, please read up on that to make sure you and your husband get everything you need!
Other than that, if it doesn't have any negative effects on your body and well-being, you go girl!

    1. Thank you so much for sharing :) We are just purging right now but we have been eating spelt bread (it is a more ancient grain) and he can tolerate that very well. We are def moving away from all processed foods (it is a process of course but that is our end goal). :)

  5. blessings on the gluten free diet!!!

I would still encourage you to find a good dr and have them do a blood test for Jason to see what might be causing him to be so sick if this gluten-free diet makes no difference. There are so many problems that have such similar symptoms. There are at least 5 different things that "match" my symptoms from my recent health problems it is overwhelming!!

  6. Hi Katy,
I am a friend of your friend over at Butterfly Days. I like checking in at your blog since I hear about you on Rebecca's blog. Today, though, I thought to leave a comment because of your story on going gluten-free. I live gluten-free, dairy-free, etc. I have had many allergies since babyhood/childhood, but I praise God every day for the foods He has created that I can eat for my wellbeing! I love food, and at first it truly was hard to let go of my wheat companions, but I found I have been profoundly better in health since I started "going against the grain" almost two years ago. I do warn you of using spelt though. It is a glutenous cousin to wheat, and if your husband is intolerant to gluten itself, then spelt can be a problem. Spelt used to be my main staple also (delicious!) but now I stick to only gluten free flours, such as sorghum, rice, corn, etc. If you need more food ideas and a wealth of GF info, I suggest looking into books by Carol Fenster, M.D. I like her 1000 Gluten Free Recipes cookbook. :) I pray the GF diet is the help your family needed for your health! Have a blessed day!
    Sincerely, Alexandra
